I have read two books by Kristin Hannah: The Women and The Nightingale.

Hannah's writing surrounds the deep and personal relationships between women.

She highlights the sacrifices women had to make in order to survive and to be heard. They did not receive recognition in their time for their contributions towards their countries in wars throughout history. Hannah's novels give perspective to her readers as to just how much the world has changed over the past century. There are certain aspects about being a woman in 2026 that feel unsafe, uncomfortable, and unseen. But we have come so far.

The women from our history have paved the way so that I can buy coffee with a credit card to an account in my own name. This act seems so simple and common, yet not that long ago, it was unfathomable. In 1974, the Equal Credit Opportunity Act prohibited banks from discriminating against people for their gender or marital status. Race and religion were not included in this law until 1976. When my grandma was my age, 28, she would not have been able to have a bank account in her own name.

Hannah's novels showcase the stories and the hardships of women in our history to give some much-needed perspective and to show there is hope for change.

Kristin Hannah creates characters that are relatable. The women in her stories are strong and powerful, yet unheard, disrespected, and put to the side. Hannah paints an image for her readers that describes the historical discrimination and maltreatment of women. She also shows the unbreakable bonds that women have amongst each other. These books fired me up and really made me cherish the women in my life. The Nightingale highlights the relationship among sisters. I have an amazing sister who is only 18 months younger than me. This book really made me feel the strong connection between the sisters in the story and made me grateful that we did not have to survive womanhood in a different time. The Women shows the impact and the powerful connection between female friendships. The end of the book showcased a community of women and it made me envious since I am so far away from some central parts of my community. It also made me value the women that have opened their arms and homes to me when I needed it most. These books inspired me just like women inspire me every single day. We are truly amazing.

I know this was less of a book review. But I appreciate you reading anyway <3.- Jo
